Laying the foundation
After a year of planning, the Mangrove Foundation was officially launched on 1 March, and will enable the company to fulfil the benevolent intentions of its members and their families. Paul Helminger, Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, is the Honorary President of the foundation, which falls under the general framework set out by the Fondation de Luxembourg.
The goals set out for the Mangrove Foundation are on several levels. The members do not wish simply to provide funds for philanthropic projects, but also their time and their expertise. They wish to raise awareness about corporate social responsibility in Luxembourg, and position themselves as a role model in this regard. Furthermore, they wish to bring the issues that will affect this generation and the next to a wider audience.
Although the actual projects supported will not be announced until a special conference in June of this year, Mangrove have defined the types of initiatives that will be given special attention. As things are, two aspects will be prioritised: environmental issues, with particular emphasis on land degradation, resource depletion and climate change. Problems due to overpopulation are another target, and the foundation will focus on programmes of education, contraception and the empowerment of women. Initiatives in these fields will be supported, regardless of where in the world they are being put into place, as the Mangrove Foundation seeks to become an active player on Luxembourg’s philanthropic scene.
